Job Description

Mō te tūnga | About the role 
We are seeking a Metadata Specialist to lead the optimisation, design, and integration of metadata across MĀORI+ and Te Ao MĀORI News. This role will assess the current state of metadata, identify opportunities for improvement, and deliver a unified framework that enhances content discoverability, cultural integrity, and user experience. 

This is a full-time, fixed term position for 3 months with a possibility to extend to 6 months, based at our head office in East Tāmaki.  

 

Ngā kawenga matua | Key responsibilities 

  • Develop and maintain a unified metadata framework that upholds consistency, cultural integrity, and editorial alignment. 

  • Design metadata classifications that reflect te ao Māori and Whakaata Māori’s kaupapa. 

  • Establish governance standards and quality assurance processes across all platforms. 

  • Lead metadata implementation from commissioning through to publication. 

  • Audit and optimise existing metadata across MĀORI+, Te Ao MĀORI News archives, and the WON broadcast management system. 

  • Apply structured tagging to improve discoverability, relevance, and user navigation. 

  • Collaborate with UX, analytics, news, reo/tikanga, and content teams to ensure metadata supports audience experience. 

  • Monitor performance metrics and provide insights to guide continuous improvement. 

  • Develop training materials and deliver workshops to build organisation-wide metadata capability. 

  • Promote and uphold organisational health and safety practices. 

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | What you’ll bring 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Management, Data Science, Library & Information Studies, Media Studies, or relevant equivalent experience. 

  • Demonstrated experience in metadata or content management within digital, broadcast, or OTT environments. 

  • Strong knowledge of metadata standards, taxonomies, and classification systems. 

  • Familiarity with te reo Māori me ōna tikanga and ability to apply cultural principles to metadata design. 

  • Confident working across editorial, technical, cultural, and product teams. 

  • Skilled in data analysis and reporting, with the ability to link metadata improvements to user behaviour and insights. 

  • Strong time management, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
